There are lots of different symbols used in Feng Shui. There are also various styles of Fish Paintings. I love to create semi realism contemporary abstract Koi painting that exudes an Asian feel. In my Koi Fish Painting, I also try to paint them as close to the specific Koi fish breed as possible so to bring the realness out in them. This is where my researched and books comes in handy. My favorite media is watercolor especially when I employ the wet-on-wet technique. The watercolors just blends itself into wonderful, surprising array of colors. Besides Watercolor, I also incorporate Acrylic, Gesso, Pastels and various other materials including touching it up digitally.

Interest in Koi Fish Painting

When I was a kid I had all kinds of pets. But I was always fascinated by Koi Fishes.

Whenever I am at my pond in my back yard, my Koi fishes would gather around. They would splash, twist and swim excitingly. And their wonderful eyes glistening under the hot tropical sun. Aside from being excellent pets, Koi fishes has an uncanny ability to recognize their owners. If only I can communicate with them, I’m sure they will tell me lots of stories. The stories of where they were from or how their ancestors were like. In many ways, my Koi Fish Paintings are stories waiting to be unfold.

To learn more about the Koi fishes, I researched and bought almost all kinds of books and reference materials related to Koi fishes. The more I read, the more I realized how little I know about these fascinating Koi fishes. These Koi fishes are totally amazing.

Three of the most popular varieties of Koi fishes are:
•    Kohaku (red on white)
•    Sanke (white koi with red and black)
•    Showa (black koi with red and white especially with black on their head)

My favorites are the Kohaku Koi Fishes. I also love the Tancho Koi. Besides being a joy to look at, my Koi Fish Paintings may even help to improve one’s overall luck by harnessing the power of Feng Shui.

Koi Fish Feng Shui Symbol

Koi fish has been associated with symbolism and mystery in the oriental culture. Chinese adore koi fish because the pronunciation of fish in mandarin means ‘Surplus and Abundance’. Apart from that, the Chinese culture also regard Koi fish as auspicious creatures due to its noble characteristics and therefore, it plays an important role in Feng Shui philosophy and meaning.

The Koi fish symbol in Feng Shui represents prosperity, wealth, longevity, courage, success, perseverance, balance and harmony. Many of these symbolic meanings date back to ancient times where a legend, “Dragon’s Gate” tells of the Koi fishes swimming upstream and against rapids to reach the mythical Dragon’s Gate on the Yellow River. Upon crossing the Dragon’s Gate, they would transformed into magnificent dragons. This legend symbolized that anyone who is able to persevere through great trials in life could accomplish their greatest goals.  It is also believe that the importance of Koi fish as a fertilizing source in sustaining the rice crop was the beginning of the fish becoming a symbol of abundance and prosperity.

Throughout the centuries, Koi fish is often depicted in Feng Shui painting since it is considered very prosperous and auspicious in Feng Shui. Good Feng Shui symbols such as Koi Fish Painting may draw the free flowing of “sheng chi” or (live energy) into our home and office, thus, enhancing the overall  ambience of our living and work environment. Hotels and Restaurants with Koi FIsh Paintings can usher in more customers too.
